In IUB or IUPUI campus housing, how do I get connected to the network?

Note: You can use the Get Connected web site to register your Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Mac OS X (10.3 and later) computer to use the Indiana University network in campus housing. Computers running Windows 2000 or Linux, as well as game consoles, must be manually registered. For help, contact the UITS Support Center at IU Bloomington by calling 812-855-6789 or at IUPUI by calling 317-274-4357. You cannot register earlier versions of Windows on the IU network in campus housing.

In Indiana University Bloomington or IUPUI campus housing, you will need the following to get connected to the campus computer network:

  • IU Network ID: Your Network ID is required before you can connect to the IU network. Most students receive their Network IDs when creating their computer accounts, or during orientation. Visiting scholars and faculty need to make arrangements with their sponsoring departments for Network IDs. For more information, see How do I get my first computing accounts at IU?

  • Ethernet card: You will need a 10BASE-T Ethernet adapter or card to connect your computer to the network. Residential IT Services (RITS) suggests that you install the card before arriving on campus, as RITS consultants cannot install it for you. For more information, see In IUB or IUPUI campus housing, how do I get an Ethernet adapter or card?

You may already have an Ethernet port on your laptop or desktop computer. Look for an 8-pin port similar to the following:

    RJ45 port
    RJ45 Ethernet port

  • Network cable:

    • IUPUI: In the Campus Apartments on the Riverwalk, you may use a commercial Ethernet cable. At IUPUI Ball Residence Hall, you must use a proprietary Ethernet cable that you can purchase from the IUPUI Housing Office, 405 Porto Allegre Street, Suite 170, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.

    • Indiana University Bloomington: If you live in non-Greek campus housing, you will find an Ethernet cable attached to the wall data jack. IUB Greek housing residents may purchase an IU proprietary Ethernet cable; see At IUB, where can I purchase an Ethernet cable?

  • Get Connected: After connecting your computer to the data jack in your room, you will automatically be taken to the Get Connected web site to download Get Connected. This software automatically configures and registers your computer so it can use IU DHCP. It only runs on Windows Vista, Windows XP (Professional or Home version) and Mac OS X (10.3 or later), and it will only automatically register computers running Windows XP and Vista.

If your computer doesn't automatically connect to the Get Connected web site, find it here:

    http://getconnected.iu.edu/

Note: Once your computer is connected to the IU network, you must register it with RITS for full network access. To register your computer, see At IUB and IUPUI, how do I register my computer? If you use Get Connected, you will be taken through this step.

  • Surge protector: Protect your computer, printer, peripherals, and other electronic equipment from power surges.

At Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI, University Information Technology Services (UITS) is in the process of extending the new IU Secure wireless network beyond the common areas and into every student room of the residence halls. If IU Secure is not yet available in your IUB residence hall, you may operate a properly configured wireless access point (WAP) as an exception to the IT-19 Extending the University Data Network and IT-20 Wireless Networking policies from the University Information Policy Office (UIPO). Once IU Secure is available in your residence hall, this exception will no longer apply, and you will have to remove your WAP from the network. For details, see At IUB, if my residence hall does not yet have IU wireless network access, how do I configure a wireless access point?

Note: At IUB, once you are connected to the network, you can print from your campus housing residence to your Residential Technology Center's (RTC's) network printer. For instructions, see In IUB campus housing, how can I print to my RTC's printer?
