At IUB or IUPUI, what information will I need to configure my Internet software?

Depending upon what Internet access software you are installing (e.g., Firefox, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express) and which platform you use (e.g., Windows, Mac OS X), you may need to configure some of the settings listed below. The generic settings for UITS computer hosts at Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI are given; see the notes below for exceptions.

  IUB IUPUI
Name (DNS) server 129.79.1.1 134.68.1.9
Secondary name server 129.79.5.100 134.68.1.2
WINS server 129.79.1.200 134.68.220.14
Secondary WINS server 129.79.5.200 134.68.220.15
Tertiary WINS server 134.68.220.14 129.79.1.200

The mail servers for IUB and IUPUI are:

  Exchange Cyrus Imail Umail
Incoming mail (IMAP) server imap.exchange.iu.edu imap.iu.edu IMAP.exchangelabs.com See the instructions from Google.
Outgoing mail (SMTP) server mail-relay.iu.edu mail-relay.iu.edu smtp.exchangelabs.com See the instructions from Google.

VPN servers

The VPN server you will need to use to make remote VPN connections will vary depending on your operating system. For a link to instructions for your operating system, see The basics of VPN at IU.

Note: At Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI, you can now access the wireless network without using VPN. See What is IU Secure?

Your IP address

The IP address of your workstation is four numbers separated by periods (e.g., 156.56.12.33 or 149.166.126.155). If you connect via Ethernet in campus housing or via the modem pools, your IP address is assigned dynamically each time you connect. For help determining the IP addresses of your workstation or router, see How do I determine my computer's IP address? and What is an IP address? If you are a faculty or staff member, you may also contact your department's computing support provider.

For the IP address of your router or gateway, the first three sets of numbers are the same as your workstation's IP address. At IUB, the last number is either 254 or 174. At IUPUI, the last number is either 100 or 101.

Notes

The settings above are correct if you connect to the Internet from campus, or through the UITS modem pool at IUB or IUPUI, although if you use a departmental LAN for your mail, some of your settings may vary.

These settings are not correct if you connect to IU computers through an outside Internet service provider (ISP). Contact your ISP for further information. Furthermore, if you connect through an outside ISP, you will not have access to some IU computing resources, including some library databases and outbound (SMTP) mail service. To access restricted services when you are connecting through a non-IU ISP, make a remote VPN connection. For more information, see The basics of VPN at IU.

To configure your Internet software, you will also need the following information:

  • Your full name
  • Your email (Internet) address
  • The path (directory locations) of helper applications
