Eudora used to be available in two versions, a full-featured commercial product and a less functional freeware product. More recently, a single version was available in several modes: Paid, Light, and Sponsored. Paid Mode required a registration fee, which disabled advertising and enabled all features. Light Mode offers basic email client functionality; Sponsored Mode offers a full feature set but always displays an advertisement in a small window that you can't close. As of May 1, 2007, you can no longer purchase Paid Mode. Mozilla is working on an open source version of Eudora, which will be available for free in 2007.

Note: If you use Eudora at Indiana University, you must use Eudora 5.1 or later. IU's mail servers use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) in conjunction with the IMAP protocol. Earlier releases of Eudora do not support SSL, while versions prior to 4.3 do not support IMAP.
