At IU, how do I forward my email?
Mail forwarding redirects incoming electronic mail for the Indiana University email domains (i.e.,indiana.edu,
iupui.edu, iue.edu, iuk.edu,
iun.edu, iusb.edu, or ius.edu)
to users' preferred email accounts. Forwarding email is a good idea if
you have more than one email account (e.g., a Cyrus mail account and
an Exchange account). Unless you log into each account regularly, you
may have unread messages in one of the accounts. Choosing a preferred
account and then forwarding your other accounts to it will ensure that
any mail addressed to your IU address is sent to the account where you
read mail.
Note: IU Webmail is an email client that you can use to read your Cyrus email at Indiana University. Like other clients (such as Eudora), it is a way to view your Cyrus mailbox. Consequently, using IU Webmail does not affect which mailbox your mail is delivered to.
To forward mail from one or more accounts to a preferred address, and avoid creating a mail forwarding loop:
- Remove mail forwarding at your preferred address
- Register your preferred address
- Forward mail on your other accounts
- Check your mail forwarding
Remove mail forwarding at your preferred address
Choose one account from which you will read mail. This will be your preferred address. Make sure there is no forward set on it by removing all mail forwarding from it. To do so, log into the account you wish to use as your preferred address, and then follow the appropriate steps below.
Webmail for Cyrus mail
See In Cyrus mail, how do I set up or remove forwarding?
Outlook
With Microsoft Outlook, from the Tools menu,
select Inbox Assistant, Rules Wizard, or
Rules. If you wish to receive mail in your Exchange account,
make sure the Forward box is not checked. For more
information on forwarding your mail in Microsoft Outlook, see In Microsoft Outlook 2000 and later for Windows, how do I automatically forward all of my mail to another address?
Other mail programs
To remove mail forwarding using other workstation-based mail clients
(e.g., Outlook Express, Eudora, Mac OS
X Mail), you can usually find forwarding options under
Preferences.
Register your preferred address
To register your preferred address with the Account Management
Service (AMS), see At IU, how do I register my preferred email address? Doing so notifies the IU
mail servers where to deliver mail addressed to your IU email account
(i.e., username@indiana.edu ,
username@iupui.edu ,
username@iue.edu ,
username@iuk.edu ,
username@iun.edu ,
username@iusb.edu , or
username@ius.edu , where username
is your username).
Note: To avoid creating a mail loop, you should take one of the following measures:
- Do not forward mail from your previous preferred address until the
next day.
- Forward your previously preferred address to your new preferred address instead of your default address, and then revise its forwarding to your default address the next day.
Forward mail on your other accounts
Forward mail on all your other accounts except your
preferred address to your IU email address (i.e.,
username@indiana.edu ,
username@iupui.edu ,
username@iue.edu ,
username@iuk.edu ,
username@iun.edu ,
username@iusb.edu , or
username@ius.edu ) replacing
username with your username. To do so, follow the
appropriate instructions below.

The best way to verify that your mail forwarding is working correctly is to send yourself test messages to and from each of your accounts. For more information, see At IU, how can I tell if my mail is forwarded?
