In IU Webmail, how do I use the Whitelist filter rule to avoid having legitimate mail quarantined as spam?

Note: This information pertains solely to the current (i.e., production) Webmail interface for Cyrus email accounts at Indiana University. UITS is testing a new version of the Webmail interface; see Information about the Webmail pilot project.

Note: The Whitelist filter rule is one of the methods you can use with Cyrus email accounts to ensure that email from specific accounts is not incorrectly identified as spam (a false positive). You can access your Cyrus mail via IU Webmail or by using an email client configured to access imap.iu.edu.

To configure the Whitelist rule in IU Webmail to always accept mail from specific email addresses, follow these steps:

  1. Log into IU Webmail at: https://webmail.iu.edu/
  2. If you have an email message from the address you would like to add to your whitelist, in the message index, click the checkbox in the left column next to the message. Then click Whitelist below the IU Webmail toolbar. If you do not have a message, instead do the following:

    1. Click the Filters icon on the IU Webmail toolbar. This will take you to the Filter Rules page with a list of already existing rules. The Whitelist rule is one of the pre-existing filter rules.

    2. In the "Rule" column, click the word Whitelist.

    3. A Whitelist page will appear. In the text box on this page, enter the email addresses, one per line.

    4. Click the Save button at the bottom of the list.

    5. When the rule has been saved, click the Return to Rules List button. This will take you back to the page listing existing rules.

  3. Make sure the Whitelist rule is enabled. In the Filter Rules section of Webmail, it should have a green checkmark in the "Enabled" column. If it does not, click the red X that appears in that column. It should change to a green checkmark, and "[ENABLED]" should appear next to Whitelist in the "Rule" column.

  4. Your Whitelist rule is now enabled. If you are finished creating rules, click the Inbox icon to return to your mail.

Note: If you set filter rules in Webmail, they will work regardless of whether you read your mail using IU Webmail or an email client such as Outlook, Entourage, or Mac OS X Mail.
