At IU, how do I reset my Network ID passphrase?
If you have forgotten your Indiana University Network ID passphrase, you can have it reset to a new value so that you can have continued access to IU services. Resetting a passphrase will change the passphrase to a new or specified value. For security reasons, UITS must be able to verify your identity in order to do this.
Using the Self-Service Passphrase Reset system
The simplest way to reset your passphrase is with the Self-Service Passphrase Reset system on the Passphrase Maintenance page. This system uses predefined questions and answers to verify your identity. Students, faculty, staff, and IU affiliates are eligible to use this system. Accounts belonging to groups, departments, or organizations are not eligible to use the Self-Service system, and will have to use one of the other options below.
Note: To reset your passphrase using the Self-Service Passphrase Reset system, you must already be enrolled in the system, and your identifying questions and answers must already be configured; see At IU, how do I enroll in the Self-Service Passphrase Reset system?
To reset your passphrase using the Self-Service Passphrase Reset system:
- Go to the Passphrase Maintenance page at: https://passphrase.iu.edu/
- In the section labeled "Forgot my passphrase:", click
go here to reset your passphrase.Note: You will need to know your 10-digit University ID number to carry out the passphrase reset; see the "Self-Service Passphrase Reset Information" page or At IU, what is a University ID, and how do I find out what mine is?
- Click
Startto begin the reset process.Note: Once you click
Start, you will have a limited amount of time to successfully complete the process. If you do not complete it in that time, you will be locked out and unable to resume the Self-Service reset process. If you are locked out, contact your campus Support Center for assistance. - Enter your last name, date of birth, and University ID number in
the fields provided. Enter the code provided in the last field.
Click
Continue.
- For each question, enter the answer you provided when you
enrolled in the system; be careful to spell your responses
correctly. Click
Continue.
- When you have successfully answered the questions, you will be
able to choose a new passphrase; follow the guidelines on the page
or see Passwords and passphrases. Enter and re-enter your passphrase in
the fields provided, and then click
Reset Passphrase.
- Click
Exitto close the window and exit the Self-Service Passphrase Reset.
Resetting your passphrase by mail or in person
If you have not enrolled in the Self-Service Passphrase Reset system, UITS can still reset your passphrase. Students, faculty, staff, IU affiliates, and IU groups and organizations can have their passphrases reset in these ways:
-
In person: Take a photo ID to one of the UITS
Support Center walk-in offices. You will need to know your
University ID number. Once a consultant has confirmed
your identity, allow 20 minutes for your passphrase change to process.
For information about Support Center walk-in offices (hours and locations), see UITS Support Center walk-in locations and services.
-
By mail: If you cannot visit the Support
Center, you may obtain a Passphrase Change Form; see How can I request a passphrase reset by mail or fax?
Print this form, fill it out, and either mail it to the address indicated on the form or fax it to 812-855-0354, attention VALID. A new passphrase will be generated and mailed to you in approximately one week.
Note: IU applicants who have problems with their passphrases should contact the UITS Support Center for assistance. See How do I contact the Support Center at each IU campus, and what are the hours and options for help?
