With the BlackBerry handheld, how do I wirelessly add or remove applications?
With BlackBerry handheld software version 3.6 or later, you can wirelessly download third-party Java applications using the BlackBerry Browser. You can then manage, run, and delete these applications using the handheld application manager.
Two files are required to wirelessly download an application to the BlackBerry handheld:
-
.jadfile: An application descriptor that provides information about the application and the location of.codfiles
-
.codfile: Compiled and packaged application code, in a BlackBerry-specific format
The BlackBerry browser uses the .jad file to discover
applications for download. This .jad file provides a URL
to the .cod files for the application. The
.jad file is required. Application .cod
files cannot be downloaded directly if a .jad is unavailable.
Adding applications
To add applications with the BlackBerry handheld:
- Use the browser on the BlackBerry handheld to locate
applications for download. Applications for the BlackBerry handheld are
available at the BlackBerry Downloads web site.
- In the browser, find the link to an application
(
.jadfile). Select the link to start the download and installation process.
- The browser will download the
.jadfile, and will display a dialog box with information about the application (e.g., name, vendor, version, and size). ClickCancelto cancel the installation process orDownloadto continue. The application manager will verify that there is enough space on the handheld to install the program. If there is insufficient space, the installation will stop; otherwise, the handheld will display a message when the installation is complete.
- On the handheld Home screen, an icon for the application will appear. Click the icon to start the application.

installed on the handheld, click

- Click the trackwheel, and select
Properties.
- Click
Delete, and then confirm the deletion.Note: Only optional and third-party applications offer a
Deleteoption. You cannot delete required BlackBerry applications from this screen.
