At IU, how can I submit my W-9S electronically?

To submit your W-9S electronically, follow these steps:

  1. Students: Log into OneStart. The Self-Service area should be visible; if it is not, select the Services tab, and choose the Self-Service section on the left.

Note: The Student Center and other Self-Service applications use pop-up pages and subpages. If your Internet pop-up blocker is set to block all pop-ups, you'll need to turn it off or change the setting to allow these pop-ups; see For Windows web browsers, how do I enable or disable pop-ups? For further assistance, contact your local Support Center.

  2. Under "Services & Information", click SSN/Education Tax Credit.

  3. On the "Tax Credits: Hope Scholarship & Lifetime Learning Credit" page, choose the appropriate option to confirm or update your Social Security number (SSN) information.

  4. After you have made your selection, click Save. A pop-up message will verify your save.

Your SSN will be used for Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax reporting as required in the Internal Revenue Code.

In 1997, the US Congress passed the Taxpayer Relief Act, which includes the Hope Scholarship and Lifetime Learning Tax Credits. This law allows you to claim qualified educational expenses as a tax credit on your federal tax return. Indiana University is required to report annually on Form 1098T whether you were enrolled at least half-time for at least one semester during the calendar year and if you were enrolled in graduate level courses. It must also report amounts you paid during the calendar year for qualified fees and any scholarships, grants, or other funds you received during the year that offset these qualified fees.

If you need additional information, email  taxpayer@exchange.ucs.indiana.edu . You can find additional information in IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Higher Education, available at:
