At IU, how do I register my wireless Pocket PC, Windows Mobile, or Palm device with DHCP?

You can register most wireless Pocket PC and Windows Mobile devices with Indiana University's DHCP service via the web. If that method fails, you can call the UITS Support Center and ask for your device to be manually registered. You will need to provide the MAC address of your device when you call. To find your device's MAC address, see the instructions at the end of this document.

PocketPC 2002/Windows Mobile

To register with DHCP on a wireless PDA running PocketPC 2002 or Windows Mobile:

  1. Do not connect using VPN.

Note: You must not initiate a VPN connection until you have registered your device. If you allow the VPN connection to proceed before registration, the DHCP server will not be able to recognize your device's MAC address. If your VPN connection attempts to launch automatically, cancel the connection attempt.

  2. From the Start menu, tap Internet Explorer and go to the URL for your campus:

  3. Enter your IU Network ID username and passphrase, and tap Done.

  4. A page will load displaying the MAC address of your device and your username. Read the content of this page and confirm your registration by tapping I Agree at the bottom of the page.

  5. On the next page, you may enter a hostname if you wish (leaving it blank is fine). Then tap Register Now.

  6. The next page should confirm your registration. Read through the details of this page for your information.

Note: Approximately five minutes after you successfully register your device, you may initiate a VPN connection and start using IU's wireless network.

Palm Tungsten C

UITS has found that Palm devices are unable to register via the web. If you have a Palm Tungsten, you must call the UITS Support Center to be manually registered. When you call the Support Center, you will need to know your MAC address. For help finding your MAC address, read the instructions in the next section.

Manually configuring a PDA for DHCP registration

The Support Center can help you manually register your PDA with the IU DHCP service. If you received the following error while trying to register your device via the web, manual registration may be your only option:

"Error- for some reason, I was unable to find your Ethernet address, please make sure you are using DHCP and try again. If this computer is using DHCP but you still get this error, please contact the Support Center. At IUB, call 812-855-6789. At IUPUI, call 317-274-4357."

Note: Before you call the Support Center to manually register your device, you must find the MAC address of your device.

Finding the MAC address on a Palm Tungsten C device

  1. From the Home screen, tap Prefs.

  2. Under Communication, tap Wi-Fi.

  3. At the bottom of the Wi-Fi Preferences screen, tap Info.

  4. You'll find the MAC address of the device listed on the third line of the screen. The format is nn:nn:nn:nn:nn:nn , where n is a hexadecimal digit.

  5. Tap Done twice to return to the Preferences main screen.

Finding your MAC address on a PocketPC 2002 or Windows Mobile device

Note: Wireless PDAs running PocketPC 2002 or Windows Mobile vary from model to model regarding which icons and settings are available. UITS has not verified these directions for every different model that exists. If the following directions do not apply to you (e.g., you do not see one of the icons listed in the instructions), you should contact the manufacturer's technical support and ask how to find the MAC address on your device.

  1. From the Start menu, tap Settings and then the System tab.

  2. Locate and tap the icon that either lists your PDA's hardware components or manages the wireless network component.

    • Toshiba e750 series: Click Wireless LAN Manager.
    • Dell Axim: Click Dell WLAN Utility. (It is on the Connections tab, not the System tab.)
    • Hewlett-Packard (HP) iPaq: Tap Asset Viewer.

  3. Locate the setting, tab, or dialog box that reveals the MAC address:

    • Toshiba e Series PocketPC: In the Wireless LAN Manager, select Info. You'll find the MAC address listed at the top of this screen.
    • Dell Axim: For the X30 models, in the Dell WLAN Utility, select Advanced. Tap Network Troubleshooting and then Advanced. For the X3i models, in the Dell WLAN Utility under "Station IP Info", tap More Info. The MAC address is one of the bottom two items.
    • Dell Axim X50v: In the Dell WLAN Utility, select Advanced. The MAC address is the third field on the screen.
    • HP iPaq: In the Asset Viewer, tap + (the plus sign) next to "Wireless LAN". The MAC address will be one of the details listed.

Note: In each case, the MAC address will be displayed as nn:nn:nn:nn:nn:nn , where n is a hexadecimal digit.

If you cannot find your MAC address using the instructions above, some third-party applications can help. For example, Dell's Axim Self-Diagnostic Utilities are available for download. Search for details at Dell's support web site.

Also, Cambridge Computer Corporation makes a freeware IP configuration tool called vxIPConfig. This tool reports the MAC address, among other details. You can find vxIPConfig at the Cambridge IP Config web site.
