How do I obtain and use the IU printer locator utility?

Windows 2000, XP, and Vista

Note: The IU printer locator utility for Windows will work only with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista computers at IUB and IUPUI. To use the utility, first install the Indiana University Windows Authentication Update available via IUware Online at:

Getting and installing the utility

  1. To obtain the IU printer locator utility, go to IUware Online at: http://iuware.iu.edu/
  2. On the left, click Printing, and then click Printer Locators.

  3. Click UITS Printer Locator 3.0, and then log in if needed. Click Download.

  4. To install the utility immediately, click Open. To download the files for installation later, click Save.

If you have saved the files for a later installation, or if the utility doesn't automatically install:

  1. Open My Computer and double-click Local Disk (C:) .

  2. Double-click the IUware Online folder, and then double-click the IU Printer Locator folder.

  3. To install the utility, double-click UITS Printer Finder.

Using the utility

  1. To launch the utility, double-click its desktop icon. Alternatively, from the Start menu, select All Programs or Programs, then IU Network Configuration Tools, and then Printer Locator.

  2. Under "Building:", select the desired location.

  3. Under "STC printer(s) in that building:", select the desired printer, and then click Add Printer. The printer will now be available in the program from which you want to print.

Mac OS X

Note: To use the Mac OS X printer locator utility, you need to be running Mac OS X version 10.4 or 10.5. Additionally, your Mac OS X account name has to be the same as your IU Network ID username. Getting and installing the utility

  1. To obtain the IU printer locator utility, go to IUware Online at: http://iuware.iu.edu/

    Note: If IUware Online defaults to IUware Online for Windows, click the Software for Macintosh link at the bottom to change the display.

  2. Click Printing, and then click the printer locator utility.

  3. Log in if needed, and then click Download.

  4. After you download the utility, the disk image should mount automatically. If not, locate the Printer Utility.dmg file, and double-click it to open it and mount the disk image.

  5. Drag the Printer Locator icon to your Applications folder.

Using the utility

  1. To launch the utility, double-click the Printer Locator icon.

  2. When prompted, supply your IU Network ID, and then click OK.

  3. In the Find an IU Network Printer window, select your campus, and then under "Building:", select the building in which you wish to find a printer.

  4. Under "Available printer(s):", select the printer you wish to use. Click Add Printer to add the printer to the list of printers in the Print & Fax System Preference (Mac OS X 10.5) or your Print Setup Utility (Mac OS X 10.4). Be sure to note the type of printer under "Printer Properties".

  5. This utility does not select the correct configuration file for the printer to which you are connecting. To select the correct configuration file:

    • Mac OS X 10.5
      1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences. In the Hardware section, select the Print & Fax icon.
      2. Select the printer you added, and then click Options & Supplies.
      3. Click the Driver tab, and then from the Print Using: menu, choose Select a driver to use.
      4. In the window that appears, select the printer type you noted in the printer utility, and click OK.

    • Mac OS X 10.4
      1. Open the Applications folder, then the Utilities folder, and then open Printer Setup Utility.
      2. Select the printer you added. Then, from the Printers menu, select Show Info.
      3. From the Local Raw Printer or Generic PostScript Printer menu, select the brand of the printer and the model number from the list that appears. (This is the printer type you noted in the printer utility.)

        Note: If you don't see the menu options listed above in step c, from the Name & Location menu at the top of the window, select Printer Model.

  6. To use the printer, find the document you wish to print, and from within its application, select Print. From the list of printers, select the printer you added in the steps above.
