In IU Webmail, how can I view Japanese language characters?

Note: This information pertains solely to the current (i.e., production) Webmail interface for Cyrus email accounts at Indiana University. UITS is testing a new version of the Webmail interface; see Information about the Webmail pilot project.

IU Webmail may display JIS Japanese characters (also called ISO-2022-JP) incorrectly because these characters conflict with ASCII HTML characters. To properly display Japanese characters in Webmail:

1. From the top menu, click Options.
   
   
2. Under "Message Options", click Message Viewing.
   
   
3. Check the box for Show link for JIS encoding, and then click Save Options.
   
   
4. To return to your mail, click Inbox.

When you read a message in Webmail, you will see a new link that says JIS Encoding. When you click this link, Webmail will convert the message to UTF-8, which does not conflict with ASCII HTML. The JIS Encoding link converts all of the common Japanese encodings, including Shift-JIS and EUC-JP.
