In LISTSERV, what does it mean to be "served off" or "served out" of a list?
If a LISTSERV user sends 50 consecutive invalid commands to a LISTSERV server, LISTSERV automatically removes that user, and further commands are ignored. Access to the web interface for LISTSERV list management also becomes disabled for that user.
When a user is served off in this fashion, a list owner or another
user can issue a SERVE net address command to restore the
user's access. For example, if
darthvader@indiana.edu were served off, the
following command could be used to restore him:
However, the SERVE command will not restore service to
users who have been served off by the list maintainer. If the list
maintainer has served off a user, it will have to be the list
maintainer who issues the SERVE command to restore
service. To contact the list maintainer, see Where can I get help for LISTSERV?
For more information about LISTSERV, refer to L-Soft's Documentation and Manuals page.
Note: For Indiana University LISTSERV mailing lists, send all commands to the appropriate address for your campus:
| Campus | Server address | |
|---|---|---|
| IU Bloomington | listserv@indiana.edu |
|
| IUPUI | listserv@iupui.edu |
|
| IU Kokomo | listserv@iuk.edu |
|
| IU Northwest | listserv@iun.edu |
|
| IU South Bend | listserv@iusb.edu |
|
| IU Southeast | listserv@ius.edu |
Never send commands to the address of the mailing
list (e.g., to listname@indiana.edu ). Send
only messages intended for members of the list to the list's address.
