In Mac OS X Mail, how do I remove SMTP servers?

Note: The following instructions assume you are using Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

Once you have added an SMTP server to your list of outgoing servers in Mac OS X Mail, to remove it, follow the appropriate instructions below:

OS X 10.3.x

  1. In Mail, from the Mail menu, select Preferences... .

  2. In the preferences window that appears, click the Accounts icon.

  3. Click the Account Information tab.

  4. On the right side of the window, near the bottom, from the pull-down menu next to "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):", select Edit Server List... .

  5. In the Outgoing Servers window that appears, select the server(s) you wish to remove, and click the Remove Server button. If you see a dialog box asking if you are sure you want to remove a server that may be in use, click Yes to proceed with removal. Click No if you wish to cancel the removal.

  6. When you are finished removing servers, click Done, then close the Mail preferences window.

OS X 10.2.x

  1. In the Finder, from the Go menu, select Go to Folder... . In the "Go to the Folder:" field, type /Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts/ , then press Return or click Go.

  2. In the Mail Scripts folder, double-click the AppleScript file named Manage SMTP Servers.scpt.

  3. When the Manage SMTP Server.scpt window opens, click the Run button. The script will prompt you to select the servers you wish to remove. Select each server and click OK to remove it. Alternatively, you may Shift-click or Cmd-click to select a group of servers and remove them all at once.

  4. When you have finished removing servers from the list, from the Script Editor menu, select Quit Script Editor. If you are prompted to save the changes to the script file, click Save.

The changes should take effect immediately.
