In Mac OS X, how do I make a VPN connection to the IU network?

Note: At Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI, you can now access the wireless network without using VPN. See What is IU Secure?

Note: IU's VPN is intended for individual computing accounts only. Group and departmental accounts cannot access the VPN. See Why can't I make a VPN connection through an IU group or departmental account?

You must be using Mac OS X 10.2 or later to make a VPN connection to Indiana University Bloomington or IUPUI. Follow the appropriate set of instructions below to make a VPN connection.

The Support Center provides a Mac VPN download page where you can download the files needed for establishing a VPN connection in Mac OS X 10.3 or later. You may choose to download and install these files; this is an easier option than following the steps below.

On this page:

Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard)

Note: For instructions on making a VPN connection if you are at an IU campus other than IUB or IUPUI, see Using Mac OS X, if I cannot connect to IU's VPN server using L2TP over IPsec, what should I do?

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences... . When the System Preferences window opens, from the View menu, select Network.

  2. Near the bottom left corner of the Network preferences window, click + (the plus sign). In the sheet that appears, next to "Interface:", choose VPN. Next to "VPN Type:", choose L2TP over IPSec. Click Create.

Note: If you can't click + (the plus sign), click the padlock icon next to "Click the lock to make changes". Enter the password for your account on your Mac, and then click OK.

  3. In the "Server Address:" field, enter the appropriate server address:

    • At IUB: ipsec.indiana.edu
    • At IUPUI: ipsec.iupui.edu

  4. In the "Account Name:" field, type your Network ID username.

If your username and passphrase are not accepted, try entering your username with the following format (replace username with your Network ID username):

    ads\username
  5. Click Authentication Settings... . In the "User Authentication" section of the sheet that appears, make sure the button next to "Password" is checked, and then enter your IU passphrase.

  6. In the "Machine Authentication" section, make sure the button next to "Shared Secret" is checked, and in the field type: hermanbwells
  7. Click OK.

  8. Click Advanced... . Under the Options tab, make sure that Send all traffic over VPN connection is checked. Click OK.

  9. Click Apply. To make a VPN connection, click Connect.

If you wish to have a small VPN icon displayed in the upper right corner of your screen, leave the box checked next to Show VPN status in menu bar. You can then click this icon and select from several options in the pull-down menu, rather than having to access VPN options from System Preferences.

Edit or remove a VPN configuration

  1. On the left side of the Network System Preferences window will be a list of network ports. Click the VPN port you want to remove; it should be marked with a padlock icon to its right.

  2. You can change server, account, and other configuration settings in the area to the right of the port list. To remove the VPN configuration, click - (the minus sign), which will be in the bottom left of the window.

  3. Click Apply to save your changes.

Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther) and 10.4.x (Tiger)

Note: If you are using Mac OS X 10.4.4, you cannot use IPsec for VPN connections at an IU campus; you will need to update your operating system. For instructions, see For Mac OS or Mac OS X, how do I obtain and install system software updates? If you try the instructions below but you still can't make a VPN connection, or if you are at a campus other than IUB or IUPUI, set up a PPTP connection instead. For instructions, see Using Mac OS X, if I cannot connect to IU's VPN server using L2TP over IPsec, what should I do?

  1. From your Applications folder, open Internet Connect. When the program opens, from the File menu, select New VPN Connection.

  2. On the sheet that drops down, select the radio button next to L2TP over IPsec, and then click Continue.

  3. Next to "Server address:", enter the appropriate server address:

    • At IUB: ipsec.indiana.edu
    • At IUPUI: ipsec.iupui.edu

  4. For "Account Name:" and "Password:", enter your IU Network ID.

Note: Your password cannot be longer than 31 characters.

If your username and passphrase are not accepted, try entering your username with the following format (replace username with your Network ID username):

    ads\username
  5. Next to "Configuration:", select Edit Configurations... . In the sheet that appears, next to "Save As:", type a descriptive name such as "IU IPsec". Click Save.

  6. In the sheet that appears, make sure the descriptive name you just saved is selected under "Configuration". Next to "Shared Secret:", type: hermanbwells
  7. Click OK.

You can temporarily change any of the settings at any point by simply entering the new information in the appropriate field. However, to remove or permanently edit a configuration, follow the appropriate steps below:

Edit a VPN configuration

  1. From the pull-down menu next to "Configuration:", select Edit Configurations... .

  2. On the sheet that drops down, you can change the description, server address, account name (username), authentication method (password or RSA SecurID), and shared secret.

  3. When you have made your changes, click OK.

Remove a VPN configuration

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences... .

  2. In System Preferences, from the View menu, select Network.

  3. From the pull-down menu next to "Show:", select Network Port Configurations.

  4. In the list of port configurations, select the VPN configuration you wish to remove, and then click Delete... . On the sheet that drops down, click Delete again to confirm the action.

  5. Click Apply Now to remove the configuration from Internet Connect.

Mac OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar)

  1. From your Applications folder, open Internet Connect. When the program opens, from the File menu, select New VPN Connection Window.

Note: The first time you do this, you may see a box warning you that you don't have an active AirPort, modem, or PPoE connection. Click Use VPN. You may also see a box prompting you to set up your VPN connection. Click Continue.

  2. In the VPN Connection window, next to "Server name:", enter the appropriate server address:

    Campus VPN server

    IU Bloomington pptp.indiana.edu
    IU East vpn.iue.edu
    IU Kokomo vpn.iuk.edu
    IU Northwest 149.162.8.2
    IUPUI pptp.iupui.edu
    IU South Bend vpn.iusb.edu
    IU Southeast vpn.ius.edu

  3. For "User name:" and "Password:", enter your Network ID username and passphrase. If you would like the computer to remember your username and passphrase for future use, check the box next to Add to Keychain.

Note: If your username and passphrase are not accepted, try entering your username with the following format (replace username with your Network ID username):

    ads\username
  4. Click Connect.

Notes

If you are connecting to the Indiana University wireless network with your AirPort-equipped Macintosh, see the information about configuring your network settings at In Mac OS X, how do I configure my network settings to use my AirPort card?

Note: If you are a student, faculty member, or staff member at Indiana University Bloomington or IUPUI, use the IU Secure network for wireless access. For help, see What is IU Secure? If you are visiting IU, instead see At IUB and IUPUI, what is a Network Access account, and how do I get one?
