In Windows XP and Vista, how do I dial into the modem pools at IUB and IUPUI?

This document explains how to manually set up a PPP connection in Windows XP or Vista at Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI. UITS recommends that you set up a PPP connection to IU for Windows XP by using the PPP Wizard or Connect to IU software, available from the IUware CD or from IUware Online at:

http://iuware.indiana.edu/

Note: This software automatically does what the instructions in this document describe how to do manually.

Windows Vista

To configure your computer to dial into IUB or IUPUI, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start menu, and then select Connect To.

  2. Near the bottom of the Network Connections window, select Set up a connection or network.

  3. Choose Set up a dial-up connection, and then click Next.

  4. Type the phone number (at IUB, 856-5200; at IUPUI, 278-5620).

  5. Type your username and password, and then give the connection a name.

  6. Click Connect. If your computer is not currently plugged into a phone jack, the connection will fail, but you can click Set up the connection anyway to save the connection for future use.

To access the dial-up connection, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start menu, and then select Connect To.

  2. Select your dial-up connection from the list, and then click Connect.

  3. To add an alternate number, right-click the dial-up connection from the list, and then choose Properties. Click the Alternates button, and then add the correct phone number (at IUB, 856-5202). Click OK.

  4. In the Alternate Phone Numbers window, make sure there is a check in the box next to If number fails, try next number. Because the alternate lines have fewer modems, leave Move successful numbers to top of list unchecked. Click OK.

Windows XP

To manually configure your Windows XP computer to dial into IUB or IUPUI, follow the steps below to create and then configure your connection settings.

To create a connection, follow these steps:

  1. If you are using the Classic Start menu, click Start and select Settings, then Network Connections.

If you are using the default Start menu, click Start, and then Control Panel. Double-click Network and Internet Connections.

  2. Under "Network Tasks" on the left, click Create a new connection. When the New Connection Wizard appears, click Next.

  3. Click Create a connection to the network at your workplace, and then click Next.

  4. Choose Dial-up Connection, and then click Next.

  5. Type a name for the connection (e.g., IUB or IUPUI), and then click Next.

  6. Type the phone number (at IUB, 856-5200; at IUPUI, 278-5620), and then click Next.

  7. Choose the option My use only, and then click Next.

  8. Check Add shortcut to this connection to My Desktop. Click Finish.

To configure the connection you just created, follow these steps:

  1. If you are using the Classic Start menu, click Start and select Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click Internet Options.

If you are using the default Start menu, click Start, and then Control Panel. Double-click Network and Internet Connections. Click Set up or change your Internet connection.

  2. Click the Connections tab. Click the name of your connection (e.g., IUB or IUPUI), and then click Settings... .

  3. Under "Dial-up Settings", you can save your Network ID username, password, and domain to avoid having to re-enter them.

  4. To add a second dial-up phone number to the connection, follow the steps below:

    1. Click Properties, and then click Alternates.
    2. Click Add, and then type the number (at IUB, 856-5202). Click OK.
    3. In the Alternate Phone Numbers window, make sure that there is a check in the box next to If number fails, try next number. Since the alternate lines have fewer modems, leave Add successful number to top of list unchecked. Click OK.

  5. Click the Networking tab and make sure that only TCP/IP and Client for Microsoft Networking are checked. No other protocols will work.

  6. Click OK three times, and then close the Network and Internet Connection control panel.

  7. To make a connection, double-click the icon on your desktop, and then click Dial.
