In Mac OS X Mail at IU, why does my account not show my Inbox mail listings?

Note: The information in this document applies only to Mail for Mac OS X 10.1.x. For information about Mail for Mac OS X 10.2.x and later, see At IU, using Mac OS X Mail on Cyrus mail, what should I do if the only folder I can see is my Inbox?

To see the contents of your Inbox, in the folder list, click the name of your account, which by default is something like IMAP:account@host and has a blue "@" to its left.

If you still can't see the contents of your Inbox, Mac OS X Mail may not be displaying your IMAP account for your Indiana University email because you created other IMAP accounts or .Mac mail accounts before creating your IU email account. This was a bug with early versions of the OS X Mail application, so the best course of action is to upgrade Mac OS X to a more recent version. If this is not an option for you, you will need to delete your Mail application preferences, as described below:

  1. If it is open, quit the Mail application.

  2. In a Finder window, click the Home icon to open your home directory.

  3. Open the Library folder.

  4. Drag the Mail folder to the Trash.

  5. Open the Preferences folder.

  6. Drag the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Trash.

  7. Empty the Trash.

The second step in establishing your connection is to create your Mail preferences:

  1. If it is open, quit the Mail application.

  2. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences... .

  3. In the System Preferences window, click Internet. If you can't see the Internet icon, click Show All and that should reveal it.

  4. Click the Email tab.

  5. Uncheck Use iTools Email account.

  6. Fill in the correct information for your IU account.

    • Next to "Email Address:" type your email address. If you are at IU Bloomington, type: username@indiana.edu If you are at IUPUI, type: username@iupui.edu Replace username with your Network ID username.

    • Next to "Incoming Mail Server:", type imap.iu.edu .
    • Next to "Account Type:", click the IMAP button.
    • Next to "User Account ID:", type your Network ID username.
    • Next to "Password:", you may type your Network ID passphrase. (You may not want to have the Preferences file retain your passphrase if you work on a shared computer.)
    • If you are on the IUB network, next to "Outgoing Mail Server:" type mail-relay.indiana.edu . If you are on the IUPUI network, type mail-relay.iupui.edu . If you are connected to a non-IU ISP, you should use your provider's mail server.

  7. Click the iTools tab.

  8. Delete the information in the "iTools Member Name:" and "Password:" fields.

  9. Launch the OS X Mail application.

  10. Complete any information required to set up your account. Much of the information will already be filled in, but for information about completely setting up your account, see At IU, how do I configure Mac OS X Mail to read my mail through IMAP?
