ARCHIVED: In Windows, how do I create a desktop shortcut to IU Webmail?

Note: This information pertains solely to the current (i.e., production) Webmail interface for Cyrus email accounts at Indiana University. UITS is testing a new version of the Webmail interface; see Information about the Webmail pilot project.

To create a shortcut that takes you immediately to IU Webmail in Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, or XP:

  1. Right-click anywhere on the desktop of your computer. From the menu that appears, select New, then Shortcut. A new window called Create Shortcut will appear.

  2. Click the Browse... button. In the Browse for Folder window, select My Computer. Double-click your hard drive (typically the C: drive) and then double-click Program Files. From there, you must go to slightly different places to get to Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Netscape:

    • For Internet Explorer, select the Internet Explorer folder and select the icon that says IEXPLORE or IEXPLORE.EXE. Click OK.
    • For Firefox, select the Program Files folder and then Mozilla Firefox, and then scroll down and select the firefox file (it may have a Firefox icon next to it). Click OK.
    • For Netscape, select the Netscape folder and then the folder for your version of Netscape (e.g., Netscape 7). Look for and select the file named netscp6, netscp6.exe, netscp7, or netscp7.exe. Click OK.

  3. You will be back at the Create Shortcut window with a path name in quotation marks. Click to place the cursor at the end of that path name, press the Spacebar, and then type webmail.iu.edu/ .

  4. Click the Next button. You will be prompted for a name for the shortcut. Type a name and click Finish.
