On my LISTSERV list, how can I control attachments?

To control attachments sent to your list in LISTSERV, you can add the keyword Attachments to your list header. Adding this keyword will allow you to reject postings that contain attachments. This is helpful in preventing viruses from infecting your list.

To add or change the settings for the Attachments keyword, edit the list header using email commands, or at Indiana University, use the LISTSERV web interface.

Using LISTSERV commands via email

Note: To complete the steps in this document, you will need to edit the list header; see On my LISTSERV list, how can I modify the list header?

To filter attachments, you can set the keyword Attachments to one of the following three options:

Attachments= Yes This setting allows users to post any type of attachment to the list.
Attachments= No This setting allows only plain text and HTML attachments. If users try to post any other type of attachments, the post will be rejected and the message will bounce back to the user. This is the default setting.
Attachments= No, Filter This setting also allows only plain text and HTML attachments. If users try to post any other type of attachments, the attachment will be stripped from the message. The stripped message is then posted to the list.

Using the IU LISTSERV web interface

To use the IU LISTSERV web interface, follow the steps below:

  1. For Indiana University LISTSERV lists, visit the menu for your campus:

Log in using your IU email address and LISTSERV password, and then from the List Management menu at the top, select List Dashboard. 2. From the List Configuration page, select the Access Control tab.

  3. Use the wizard to edit the settings for the Attachments keyword. When you are finished, click Submit.
