Using Eudora with IMAP, how can I permanently remove deleted items?
Note: At IU you are required to use Eudora 5.1 and later. Earlier releases of Eudora do not support Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), while versions prior to 4.3 do not support IMAP.
Eudora can handle deleted IMAP messages in two ways:
- If you have Eudora configured to use a trash folder on the server
and delete a message, it disappears from the folder listing. It has
not yet been removed, but instead is temporarily stored in whatever
folder you have designated as the trash folder.
- If you do not use a trash folder on the server, when you delete messages, they do not disappear from the folder listing. Instead, they are marked with a slashed circle in Mac OS and Mac OS X, and a red "X" in Windows.
To permanently remove a message, follow these steps:
- In Eudora's message list, click the message to select it.
- Press
Cmd-din Mac OS or OS X, orCtrl-din Windows.
- If you are using a trash folder on the server, from the
Specialmenu, selectEmpty Trash.
If you are not using a trash folder, and are using Mac OS or OS X, hold theOptionkey down, and from theSpecialmenu, selectRemove Deleted MessagesorEmpty All Trash Mailboxes.
In Windows, if you are not using a trash folder, from theMessagemenu, selectPurge Messages.
Note: Once you have removed a message in this way, you cannot retrieve it.
