At IU, what is a virtual hostname, and how can I get one for my web site?
A virtual hostname is one that is substituted for the actual hostname in a URL, making it easier for visitors to find web sites by offering a shorter, more intuitive URL. The web server recognizes the virtual hostname and associates it with an alternative root document directory.
If you have an account on Webserve
(www.indiana.edu, www.iupui.edu,
www.iun.edu, or www.iuk.edu), you can
request a virtual hostname for your account. The annual fee for this
service is $125. You will be billed at the start of service and each
July thereafter for each unique address.
Note: Virtual hostnames are not available for personal home pages at Indiana University.
As an example of how a virtual hostname might work, suppose your web site's URL is:
http://www.indiana.edu/~mathdept/You could request a virtual hostname such as:
http://math.indiana.edu/For more information, see the IU Webmaster's Virtual Host Name Service page. To request virtual host service, complete the Virtual Host Name Request Form.
Note: You must log in with your IU Network ID to access the online request form.
If you have questions about this service, contact the IU Webmaster.
