What is an SMTP server?
An SMTP server is a computer that receives outgoing mail messages from
users and routes them to their intended recipients. All
SMTP servers implement some version of the Simple Mail
Transport Protocol, and many that run Unix use the
sendmail program. Messages often must pass through
several servers to reach their destinations, and SMTP facilitates
this.
The SMTP server address for all Indiana University campuses except IPFW (which has its own SMTP servers), is:
mail-relay.iu.eduNote: Indiana University's outbound (SMTP) server requires authentication and a secure connection (SSL or TLS). Make sure you enable these settings in your mail software. For more information, see Instructions for changing mail settings to meet UITS requirements.
