At IU, in Eudora for Mac OS or Mac OS X, how do I read my IU email using IMAP?

For important information about accessing your Indiana University email account using Eudora for Mac OS or Mac OS X, see What are the requirements for using Eudora for Mac OS X to read my IU mail?

To configure Eudora in Mac OS or Mac OS X to read your Cyrus or Exchange mail at Indiana University using IMAP, follow the instructions below:

Note: If you have Mac OS 9 or earlier, you will not be able to use Eudora to access Cyrus. If you are using Mac OS X, you must have Eudora 6.2 or later to access Cyrus.

  1. Start Eudora. From the Special menu, select Settings... . If you are running Eudora for the first time, the Settings window may appear automatically. If so, skip to the next step.

  2. On the left side of the Settings window, in the list of settings categories, click the Getting Started icon.

  3. On the right side of the window, in the "Username:" field, enter your Indiana University Network ID username (e.g., dvader ).

  4. Next to "Mail Server:", enter the address for your IMAP server. At IU, use the following:

  5. In the "Real Name:" field, enter your name.

  6. In the "Outgoing" or "SMTP" server field, type:

    mail-relay.iu.edu
  7. Under "Return Address", enter your full IU email address.

If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see At IU, what is my email address?

  8. On the left side of the window, click the icon for the Checking Mail settings category. Then, on the right side of the window, next to "Mail Protocol:", click the IMAP button.

  9. Leave the "Location Prefix:" field blank.

Note: If you are using the Cyrus mail system, and you have trouble receiving mail after configuring your account according to these instructions, try putting  ""  (double quotes) in this field.

  10. On the left side of the window, scroll through the list of settings categories, and then click the SSL icon.

  11. On the right side of the window, for both the pull-down menu next to "SSL for SMTP:" and the one for "SSL for IMAP:", select Required (Alternate Port). Click OK.
