At IU, in Eudora for Windows, how do I read my Cyrus mail using IMAP?
Note: If you use Eudora at Indiana University, you must use Eudora 5.1 or later. IU's mail servers use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) in conjunction with the IMAP protocol. Earlier releases of Eudora do not support SSL, while versions prior to 4.3 do not support IMAP.
Configuring Eudora
To set up a new Personality (Eudora's term for account
configuration settings), from the Tools menu, choose
Personalities. Then right-click anywhere in the
Personalities window, and select New. This will
begin the New Account Wizard.
Note: If you are setting up Eudora for the first time, the New Account Wizard will appear automatically.
Once the New Account Wizard is open, follow these directions to configure Eudora to read your Cyrus mail:
- Select
Create a Brand New Email Account, and then clickNext.
- Enter a name for your Personality, and then click
Next.
- For "Your Name:", enter your full name as you would like it to
appear, and then click
Next.
- For "Email Address:", enter your IU email address, and then click
Next.If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see At IU, what is my email address?
- For "Login Name:", verify that your username is correct, and then
click
Next.
- For "Incoming Server:", enter
imap.iu.edu.
- For the type of server, choose
IMAP, and then clickNext.
- Leave the "IMAP Location Prefix" blank. Click
Next.
-
In the "Outgoing" or "SMTP" server field, type:
mail-relay.iu.edu - Select
Allow Authentication. ClickNext, thenFinish.
- In the
Enter Passworddialog box, clickCancel, and in theNotedialog, clickNo. Before you can connect, you will need to enable SSL for the incoming server.
Enabling SSL
To enable SSL, follow these directions:
- From the
Toolsmenu, selectPersonalities. Right-click the Personality you just created, and selectProperties.
- In the
Account Settingsdialog, set "Secure Sockets when Sending" toRequired, Alternate Port.
- Click the
Incoming Mailtab and set "Secure Sockets when Receiving" toRequired, Alternate Port. ClickOK.
You should now be able to log in successfully by clicking Check
Mail.
Troubleshooting SSL
If you are unable to connect, follow these additional steps to configure Eudora's initialization file by hand:- Close Eudora and find the
eudora.inifile. It will be located in one of two following places:
-
c:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\ -
c:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora\
In place of
usernamewill be the name of the user whose Eudora settings you are editing. Right-click the file icon and chooseOpen With, then selectNotepad. -
- In the
eudora.inifile, at the end of the "Settings" section, add the stringIMAPSSLAlternatePort=993. Save these changes, and then open Eudora.
You can verify that the SSL certificate is in place by doing the following:
- From the
Toolsmenu, selectPersonalities. Right-click the Personality that should contain the SSL certificate, and chooseProperties.
- Click the
Incoming Mailtab, and then click theLast SSL Infobutton. If you have not been granted an SSL certificate, you will see an error message that says "You have never checked mail using SSL connection with this personality since the last time you started Eudora."Note: The exception to this is when you verify your SSL information by selecting
Tools, thenOptions, thenChecking Mail:; in this case, you will always see the above error.
