Using Microsoft Outlook Web Access, how do I create and manage folders?

You can create and manage folders in Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA). OWA should look similar to your desktop client, with the exception of the web browser toolbars at the top and bottom of the window. On the left are the Outlook Bar icons, and along the top (beneath your browser's toolbar) is the OWA toolbar. For more, see In Outlook Web Access at IU, what are the buttons and icons in the toolbar?

Note: Outlook Web Access (OWA) is a secure site with two distinct interfaces, depending on which web browser you use. UITS highly recommends the Premium interface (available through Internet Explorer in Windows) over the Light interface (available through all other browsers or operating systems) for the optimal OWA experience. For more information, see In Outlook Web Access (OWA), what are the "Premium" and "Light" interfaces?

Premium interface instructions

Note: If you are using the Premium interface, you can access all of the folder management options by right-clicking the folder and, from the menu that appears, choosing your desired option.

Creating a new folder

  1. Once you have decided in which folder you want to create the new folder, right-click that folder (i.e., if you want to create a subfolder in the Inbox, right-click the Inbox).

  2. From the menu that appears, choose Create New Folder.

  3. Type a name for the folder in the box, and then press Enter.

Renaming a folder

  1. Right-click the folder you want to rename and, from the menu that appears, choose Rename.

  2. Type the new name of the folder in the box, and then press Enter.

Moving a folder

  1. Right-click the folder you want to move and, from the menu that appears, choose Move Folder.

  2. In the Move or copy folder window, click where you want to move the folder (i.e., if you want the folder to be a subfolder of the Inbox, click the Inbox).

  3. Click Move.

Deleting a folder

  1. As OWA will not prompt you to confirm the deletion once you click Delete, you should first make sure that all the messages in the folder are ready for deletion.

  2. Right-click the folder you want to delete and, from the menu that appears, choose Delete.

Light interface instructions

If you are using the Light interface, in the left menu pane, click Manage Folders. The following options will appear:
