For Maple, how can I transfer a worksheet between different computing platforms?
When transferring a worksheet between different computing platforms in Maple, be aware of the following:
- The computing platforms must be running the same version of Maple.
- Embedded graphics and fonts are not transferable across computing systems.
Choose the appropriate instructions below.

Mac OS X to Unix
On your Mac OS X computer, create your worksheet and save it in Standard Format:
- From the
Filemenu, selectSave a Copy in....
- Type a filename of your choice.
- Make sure that
Save in Standard Formatis enabled, and then selectSave.
Transport your file to the Unix host using FTP or your modem's file transfer system (e.g., zmodem, xmodem, kermit). Invoke Maple on Unix and load the file into your xmaple session normally.
Unix to Mac OS X
Reverse the Mac OS X to Unix process above, i.e., save your xmaple file normally, transport it, and then open the file in your Mac worksheet. No special naming conventions (extensions) or saving techniques are necessary.
Mac OS X to Windows
On your Mac OS X computer, save your worksheet in Standard Format:
- From the
Filemenu, selectSave a Copy in....
- Type a filename of your choice.
- Make sure that
Save in Standard Formatis enabled, and then selectSave.
Transfer the file to the Windows workstation using FTP or via diskette. The Apple File Exchange software is a good choice for loading data onto a diskette that is formatted for DOS or Windows, but this program is not available on all Macs.
Copy the file onto the Windows workstation, renaming it with a
.ms extension (e.g., myfile.ms). Start Maple
and load this .ms file into the worksheet.
Windows to Mac OS X
Reverse the Mac OS X to Windows process above, i.e., save your
.ms file from Windows and transport it to the Mac OS X
computer (for example, save the file to a PC diskette, and then
transport it to the Mac using the Apple File Exchange software). Copy
the file into the Mac worksheet. No special naming conventions
are required for the file on the Mac.
Unix to Windows
Save your worksheet as a .ms file from your xmaple
session. Transfer the file to your PC using FTP. Verify that the name
of the transferred file has a .ms extension on the
PC. Start your Windows Maple session and open up the transferred
.ms file.
Windows to Unix
Reverse the Unix to Windows process above, i.e., save your
.ms file in Windows, transfer the file to the Unix
computer using FTP, and then load the transferred .ms
file in an xmaple session.
For more about Maple, see the Stat/Math Center's Maple at IU page.
For more information about statistical and mathematical software, email the UITS Stat/Math Center, visit the center's web page, or phone 812-855-4724 (IUB) or 317-278-4740 (IUPUI). The center is located in Bloomington at 410 N. Park Avenue, and is open for consultation by appointment Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.
