In Emacs, how do I set the mark?
You can usually set the mark in Emacs by typing either
C-SPC or C-@. If your terminal program does
not let you type either of these keystrokes, or if they do not appear
to have any effect, you can also set the mark by entering:
M-x set-mark-command
This will have the same effect as the single keystroke. You can check
to confirm that Emacs has set the mark by checking whether the message
"Mark set" is reported in the message line at the bottom of the
screen.
