In Microsoft Word 97 and 2000, how do I change straight quotes to smart quotes?
If you begin a new Word file with the Times New Roman font, or import a text file with this or any other font, you will notice that both single and double quotes may remain straight. These are sometimes called typewriter style quotation marks or inch marks. Word 97 and 2000 don't automatically convert straight quotes to smart quotes.
To change the quotes to typeset appearance (i.e., smart quotes), do the following:
- From the
Formatmenu, selectAutoFormat....
- When the dialog box opens, click the
Options...button.
- Click the
AutoFormattab. Under "Replace", confirm that the"Straight quotes" with "Smart quotes"box is checked. If not, click the box to check it.
- Click the
OKbutton. You will find yourself back in theAutoFormatdialog box.
- You can choose to let AutoFormat format everything in one step (by
selecting
AutoFormat Now), or you can ask it to let you confirm each change (by selectingAutoFormat and review each change). Choose the option you prefer by clicking the appropriate button, and clickOK.
