In LISTSERV, what are archives and notebooks?

A LISTSERV archive is a collection of notebook log files. A notebook log file is a file that contains all of the posts sent to a list. To find out what notebook files are available for a LISTSERV mailing list, you can send a command to the LISTSERV server, or at Indiana University use the LISTSERV web interface. Follow the appropriate instructions below.

LISTSERV command

Put the following line in the body (not the subject line) of a mail message to the LISTSERV server:

Replace listname with the name of the list.

The list owner determines whether notebooks are kept for the list, and at what interval they are created (i.e., weekly, monthly, or yearly).

Note: For Indiana University LISTSERV mailing lists, send all commands to the appropriate address for your campus:

Never send commands to the address of the mailing list (e.g., to  listname@indiana.edu ). Send only messages intended for members of the list to the list's address.

IU LISTSERV web interface

1. Log in at the IU LISTSERV web interface; for more information, see At IU, how do I access the web interface for LISTSERV list management?.

   Note: If the web interface lets you bypass the "Login" page and takes you directly to the Archives, it means your browser has saved your LISTSERV password in a cookie. To get to the "Login" page, you will have to click Log Off to reset the cookie. Depending on which browser you're using, you may also have to exit your browser to successfully reset the cookie.

2. Under "List name", select the list for which you would like to view notebooks.
   
   
3. A list of notebooks will appear, arranged chronologically in the frequency the owner has specified.
