In LISTSERV, how do I use mail templates?
LISTSERV uses forms within mail templates to send
administrative messages to users in response to commands it receives.
For example, the "You are now subscribed..." message is a form found
in the DEFAULT.MAILTPL file. The
DEFAULT.MAILTPL file includes these forms as well as many
others:
| Form | Description |
|---|---|
| ADD1 | Message sent when a list owner or a LISTSERV list maintainer manually adds a subscriber to a list |
| AUTODEL1 | Message sent to users deleted by delivery error monitor |
| CONFIRM1 | Message sent when an OK confirmation is required |
| DELETE1 | Message sent to subscriber when list owner deletes a user from a list |
| INFO | Response to "INFO listname" |
| PROBE1 | Message sent to check a user's subscription status |
| SIGNOFF1 | Notification to list owner that someone has unsubscribed |
| SIGNUP1 | "Your subscription request has been accepted" message |
| SUB_CLOSED | Message sent to a subscriber attempting to join a closed list |
At Indiana University, you can access your mail template and customize these forms by using the web interface for list management; follow these steps:
-
For Indiana University LISTSERV lists, visit the menu for your campus:
Log in using your IU email address and LISTSERV password, and then from the
List Managementmenu at the top, selectList Dashboard. Under "List Name", clickConfigureunder the name of the list you wish to edit. If you do not have a LISTSERV personal password, see In LISTSERV, how do I set or change a personal password? - Click
List Managementat the top, and next to "Customization", chooseMail Templatesto enter the template editor.
- Use the drop-down list to select a form for viewing or
editing. Any form with a
(*)preceding its name already contains text that you can modify. Those without a(*)are blank; they do not contain any text until you add it. Once you've chosen the form you wish to edit, clickEdit Form.
- In the "Subject:" field, you can add text or modify existing text
as you wish; it is for administrative use only and will not be seen
by subscribers to your list.
- In the "Contents:" field, you can modify the
existing text or add new text to the form. The text you provide here
will be viewable by your list subscribers. Once you've finished
editing the form, click
Update.Note: If you want to revert to the default or previously saved version of the form, click
Reload. To delete the existing form, clickDelete.
