In LISTSERV, how do I set or change a personal password?

Several of the operations performed by LISTSERV list owners and file owners are protected and require a password. The LISTSERV web interface also requires a password for several functions, including managing your list subscriptions. Even if you aren't a list owner or editor, you need a password to use these functions. To add, remove, or change your personal password, either send a PW command to the LISTSERV server or use the LISTSERV web interface.

The PW command

Note: Since LISTSERV passwords are sent in unencrypted email, you should never use your Network ID password as your LISTSERV password.

In all of the following commands, replace newpassword with the password you wish to use and oldpassword with your current password:

  • To add your personal password to the password file, send this command in the body of an email message: PW ADD newpassword
  • To remove your personal password, send this command: PW RESET
  • To change your personal password, send this command: PW CHANGE newpassword PW=oldpassword

If you omit the old password (e.g., if you've forgotten it), LISTSERV will ask you to confirm the change request using the two-way OK mechanism.

Note: For Indiana University LISTSERV mailing lists, send all commands to the appropriate address for your campus:

  Campus Server address
  IU Bloomington listserv@indiana.edu
  IUPUI listserv@iupui.edu
  IU Kokomo listserv@iuk.edu
  IU Northwest listserv@iun.edu
  IU South Bend listserv@iusb.edu
  IU Southeast listserv@ius.edu

Never send commands to the address of the mailing list (e.g., to  listname@indiana.edu ). Send only messages intended for members of the list to the list's address.

The LISTSERV web interface

You can also set up a password through the LISTSERV web interface.

For Indiana University LISTSERV lists, visit the menu for your campus:

  Campus URL
  IU Bloomington https://listserv.indiana.edu/cgi-bin/wa-iub.exe
  IUPUI https://listserv.iupui.edu/cgi-bin/wa-iupui.exe
  IU Kokomo https://listserv.iuk.edu/cgi-bin/wa-iuk.exe
  IU Northwest https://listserv.iun.edu/cgi-bin/wa-iun.exe
  IU Southeast https://listserv.ius.edu/cgi-bin/wa-ius.exe
  IU South Bend https://listserv.iusb.edu/cgi-bin/wa-iusb.exe

Log in using your IU email address and LISTSERV password, and then select List Dashboard from the menu. If you do not have a LISTSERV personal password, see In LISTSERV, how do I set or change a personal password?

  1. After accessing the web interface, click Log In.

Note: If the web interface lets you bypass the "Login" page and takes you directly to the "Archive Page", it means your browser saved your LISTSERV password in a cookie. To get to the "Login" page, you will have to click Log Off to reset the cookie. Depending on which browser you're using, you also may have to exit your browser to successfully reset the cookie.

  2. On the "Login" page, if you need to set up a password, click get a new LISTSERV password. You will be prompted for an email address (the one you use for the list), a password, and password confirmation. If you had a password but have forgotten it, doing this will automatically replace it with the password you enter here.

  3. After you register your password, LISTSERV will send you a confirmation message to which you must reply either by email (with ok in the body of the message) or by clicking the web link provided in the message.

Your password will be good for any of your lists that you administer from that particular email address.
