With the Passphrase Maintenance utility, why did I get a "failed (server not available)" message while changing my passphrases?

When the Passphrase Maintenance utility fails to change a passphrase, it could be due to one of the following:

  • A change could not be made to the Kerberos (Network ID) database.

  • One or more of the targeted computing systems is not responding. Usually this error means that your passphrase was not changed on one or more systems.

  • At peak times, your change may simply be delayed due to the number of passphrase change requests.

If you encounter this or another error, wait at least an hour and then try using the Passphrase Maintenance utility again. IMS strongly suggests that, when making a second passphrase change attempt, you use the passphrase you entered in your first attempt.

If your second attempt is unsuccessful, contact your campus Support Center.

If you need immediate access to the system that gave you an error, you should be able to log in using your old passphrase. However, it is important that you repeat the passphrase change request process successfully as soon as possible.

Note: Be aware that when you change your Network ID passphrase, you may have to wait up to 20 minutes for all systems to recognize the new passphrase. In other words, you may have a short wait before you can do such things as log into IU Webmail, dial into IU's modems, create new computing accounts, reset your passphrase again, or check your grades.
