ARCHIVED: In DOS, how do I rename drives and assign drive names to subdirectories?
You can rename subdirectories as drives and/or assign other names to
drives using the SUBST command. In the following examples,
E: is used as an example of a new drive substitution.
To turn c:\dos into e: , enter:
SUBST E: C:\DOS
If you enter SUBST by itself, a list of the current
substitutions will display, as illustrated below:
E: => C:\DOS
To cancel a substitution, enter:
SUBST E: /d
Note: Do not use backup, restore, format, diskcopy,
or diskcomp while a substitution is in effect.
Warning: SUBST may conflict with Novell drive
mappings. After logging into your LAN, enter
MAP to find out which drive letters are in use. Avoid
using these drives with the SUBST command.
